Questions
Is Sight Reading Practice free?
Yes. Sight Reading Practice is free to use with no account. A few clearly marked ads, kept away from the practice controls, pay for running the site.
Do I need an instrument?
No. You can sing or hum the notes, tap them on the on-screen piano, or use your computer keyboard. If you do have an instrument, play along and let Sight Reading Practice listen.
How does “Check me” work?
Press Check me, then play the exercise one note at a time. Each note turns green when you play the right pitch and red when you don’t, with the note you played written underneath. It checks pitches, not rhythm, so take it at your own speed.
Can I use a MIDI keyboard?
Yes, in Chrome, Edge and Opera on a computer or Android device. Plug in a USB or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard, press Check me, then Connect MIDI. The browser asks for permission once.
Does the microphone work with my instrument?
It works with any instrument or voice that plays one note at a time. Play each note clearly and let it sound for a moment. Sight Reading Practice hears concert pitch, so on a transposing instrument such as B♭ clarinet or trumpet, turn on “any octave” and read the result in concert pitch.
Where are my pieces and progress saved?
In your browser, on this device only. Nothing you enter is uploaded. Clearing your browser’s site data removes it, so use Share link to keep a copy of an important piece.
Can teachers use it with students?
Yes. Enter a passage in My music, then use Share link to send it. The student opens the link, hears it, and can check themselves against it. The music is stored in the link itself.
